About Stress Directions

Stress Directions, Inc. (SDI), is the most comprehensive and trusted electronic source of stress health knowledge, and the leader in online solutions to individual and organizational stress.

A Boston-based web publishing and consulting company founded in 1994, SDI is committed to addressing the global issue of stress. We specialize in the development of stress knowledge tools that benefit people, organizations and society.

SDI's Behavioral Wellness Program (BWP) focuses on perception and behavior to solve the life problems that lead to stress.

SDI designed the BWP to enable individuals and organizations to leverage the internet in applying SDI's expertise. In this real-time environment, they can systematically evaluate and organize their thinking about their stress susceptibilities, sources and symptoms, and chart a course of effective action to address them.

SDI believes that because of the complexity of every life, data and information must be customized to individual experience to guide appropriate actions for positive results. Given knowledge and the opportunity to use it, individuals and organizations will work to heal themselves.

The BWP is widely used in clinical and corporate settings in the United States and abroad. It has been used for more than twelve years by thousands of people to reduce stress and improve their quality of life.

BellSouth, IBM, Gillette, the U.S. State Department, and the U.S. Forestry Service are only a few of the companies and agencies that have worked with SDI to benefit their employees and identify the patterns and costs of organizational stress.

The BWP is based on research conducted by company founders Drs. Lyle H. Miller and Alma Dell Smith, as well as their clinical treatment experience with stress management and the treatment of stress-related physical and mental symptoms and complaints.

During the 1990s, our paper-based psychometric questionnaire (originally named the Stress Audit) evolved to become the expert online system that includes the BWP and its extended analytics. We created the interactive workshop and re-named our offerings to reflect our ability to leverage the real-time power of the internet and corporate intranets to further our comprehensive effort toward ongoing wellness and education for people living and working in stressful times.

We share our knowledge about stress in four ways:

  1. The testing instrument, the Personal Stress Navigator
  2. An expert system-generated interpretive report
  3. A corporate stress report
  4. A presenteeism report
  5. A Stress Audit

The BWP is the only consumer stress healthcare product based on a research-driven, clinically tested model. The Biobehavioral Model meets the highest scientific and clinical standards. Writings about the model are integrated into stress materials produced by the American Psychological Association and the American Management Association.
