Meet the Stress Experts

The company founders, Drs. Lyle H. Miller and Alma Dell Smith, have dedicated their professional lives to the measurement, analysis, and treatment of stress and stress-related ailments and complaints. They are the authors of two popular books on stress, The Stress Solution and Stress and Marriage, which have sold more than 150,000 copies combined. Their work is quoted extensively in print and in authoritative, professional web sites, such as the American Psychological Association. The psychometric device developed by Drs. Miller and Smith, the Personal Stress Navigator, is recognized as the "Gold Standard of Stress Asessment" by Dr. Norman Anderson, CEO of the American Psychological Asociation.  Originally published as the Stress Audit, the Personal Stress Navigator is the only stress-assessment instrument peer reviewed and listed in O.K. Buros' 10th Mental Measurements Yearbook, published by the Buros Institute at the University of Nebraska.

Drs. Miller and Smith are also the founding members of the Biobehavioral Institute of Boston and the Biobehavioral Treatment Center. More than 1,000 physicians, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and human-resource executives have referred patients and employees to the treatment center for the diagnosis and treatment of stress-related disorders.

Drs. Miller and Smith have collectively published more than 120 scientific papers in the field of stress and behavioral health and wellness. Based on their extensive research and clinical experience, they developed the Biobehavioral Model of Stress, the core of the Behavioral Wellness Program (BWP). Their work has been featured on the cover of Time magazine and in other popular publications. They are regularly invited to lecture at schools, universities and professional societies, and their research appears in more than 50 textbooks.

Dr. Miller has held professorships at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine, Louisiana State University School of Medicine, and Boston University's School of Medicine, where he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biobehavioral Sciences. He has coached leading executives from the private sector on stress-related performance issues. Currently, he directs the Biobehavioral Institute, a non-profit research organization focusing on stress and behavioral health, and is President of Stress Directions, Inc.

Dr. Smith, in addition to her extensive knowledge about stress in general, has a particular expertise in women's health and was the Director of Psychological Services of the Women's Health Group at Boston University Medical Center. She is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology with the American Board of Professional Psychology. Her work includes the design and implementation of programs in stress management and behavioral wellness. She currently writes, lectures, directs the Biobehavioral Treatment Center, and is Vice President of Stress Directions, Inc.
